Deep roots in American history
When the Ohio Welding Company was founded by C.F. Meyer
In 1952 the Meyer family sells off the welding side of the business to a set of brothers, Harold and William Grumney. They then renamed the business Lake Erie Welding & Fabricating. The welding supply & gas business later became known as the O.E. Meyer Company, which is still headquartered in Sandusky, OH. They have continued to grow with over 5 locations throughout the state of Ohio to this date.
At the time of the Grumney brothers acquiring the business, Lake Erie Welding was operating out of a 1,600 square foot facility with only four employees.
In 1955 the fifth employee was hired, Anthony “Tony” Guerra who was fresh out of the Navy at this time.
Tony then purchased the business at 50% ownership in 1963. By the year 1973 Tony became the sole owner. He saw the potential for growth and wasted no time in pushing for this growth.
He slowly started hiring more and more employees, along with the acquiring of metal fabrication equipment. This side of the business started with steel hoppers, carts and machine bases. Over the course of a decade, Lake Erie Welding manufactured over 2,500 horse treadmills which were used for exercising quarter horses.
Tony's work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit allowed him to see the business’s potential for growth. Presented by the Sandusky Area Chamber of Commerce, in 1979 Lake Erie Welding accepted the award for business of the year.

Tony’s sons, Ron & Jerry Guerra join the family business
During this time, Cedar Point, a world-renowned theme park just down the road from Lake Erie Welding, was one of the company’s largest customers and was the first to install aluminum Q-line railings, along with providing all of the black wrought iron fencing along the beach boardwalk which is still in place to this very day. More business came from the strong automotive presence in Northern Ohio, due to the need for various conveyor equipment. Additional business was then found within the chemical industry; with the manufacturing of the first 55-gallon drum “Hot Box”. The demand within the chemical industry and the world of conveyance lead to the core of LEWCO’s products today, Material Handling and Industrial Ovens.
Lake Erie Welding moves into their new 64,000 square foot manufacturing facility due to their growth. At the time there were a total of 24 employees. This space was quickly outgrown within roughly four years. Lake Erie Welding took the opportunity to purchase the former Farrell-Cheek Steel Foundry. In just two years this space was transformed into a modern 165,000 square foot manufacturing facility, which is still LEWCO’s home to this day.
